How DCPA Groupies got started

In 2018, I wanted to see Les Misérables at our local theater. I said to my wife, "Let's buy 10 tickets. Surely we know 8 other people who'll join us!" This is how it all started.

This is a volunteer effort. I do it because I truly believe that this group provide the impetus to get folks out to the theater. The DCPA really appreciates it too. They have been a joy to work with, and there are some benefits to buying through group sales.

One key advantage is early access to seats before public sale. This allowed us to secure prime spots for our group. Our mode of operation has been to get the best of the cheapest seats available. This has worked out great. We're typically in Sections A or E and usually between rows "F" and "W". For some shows, we might be a little further back.

Our theater nights grew into full evenings out. Folks often meet for dinner before the show, allowing everyone to socialize and build anticipation. Sometimes, the night extends to post-show drinks and discussion.

I maintain a strict non-profit rule. Group members can give away or sell their tickets if needed, but never for profit. This keeps the focus on the shared experience and appreciation of theater.

What began as a desire to see Les Misérables has grown into a rewarding hobby that brings people together through live theater. Our group has now expanded to about 250 people, and we're projected to top $50,000 in tickets purchased in the current theater season.
